Understanding SIBO: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment

What is SIBO?

SIBO, or Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth, occurs when there is an abnormal increase in bacteria in the small intestine. While bacteria are essential for gut health, they are typically concentrated in the large intestine. When too many bacteria grow in the small intestine, it can lead to digestive issues and interfere with nutrient absorption.

What Causes SIBO?

Several factors can lead to the development of SIBO, including:

  • Digestive Disorders: Conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or celiac disease can contribute to SIBO.

  • Slow Motility: When food moves slowly through the digestive system, it can cause bacteria to grow in the wrong place.

  • Prior Surgery or Blockages: Surgeries involving the intestines or physical blockages can increase the risk of SIBO.

  • History of multiple antibiotic use

Symptoms of SIBO

SIBO can cause a range of symptoms, often overlapping with other digestive issues:

  • Bloating

  • Abdominal pain or discomfort

  • Diarrhea or constipation

  • Gas and belching

  • Fatigue

  • Malnutrition or weight loss in severe cases

How is SIBO Treated?

Treatment for SIBO usually involves a combination of:

  1. Antibiotics/ Antimicrobials: To reduce bacterial overgrowth.

  2. Dietary Changes: Specific diets, such as low FODMAP, can help reduce symptoms by limiting foods that promote bacterial growth.

  3. Probiotics: To restore healthy gut bacteria balance after treatment.
